Wise means "having wisdom", which is a subjective status but generally recognized as being able to apply one's experience or knowledge, and to exercise valid judgment. A wise man may be smart, or knowledgeable, or discerning, or prudent, or any combination thereof.

It is also said that being wise is "knowing what you don't know".

Wise, or "wizened", is an adjective taking its roots from Middle English, meaning "sagely, learned, or intelligent." The word often conjures images of old, white-bearded wizards and porch-dwellers sputtering out intelligent perceptions of situations to their oft-confused younger compatriots.
