"Wold" is a noun meaning an upland area of open country or a hilly or rolling region. It is no longer in common use but remains as part of the names of some geographic areas in England, "the Yorkshire Wolds" for example.

What is the meaning of the poem The Cricket Sang?

Well I'm not positive this is right, but here's what I think:When crickets sing, its at night. So, in this poem the Day becomes Night. Why I think that is because the workmen finished their jobs, and who wold work in the pitch dark in the night? I am really confused with the second stanzas, so lets skip to the third one. If don't know what vastness means, it means New. When they say neighbor, they don't mean an actual neighbor ( as in human ) they mean the night. Because its the night, the night doesn't have a face or name. ( well it is called Night, but oh well, you should know what they mean - as in person's face or name. ) peaceful in the night, and the night arrived.I hope that helps/ :)
