This book is about a young Chinese boy named Moonshadow Lee, from the Tang, that has never seen his father, Windrider, who's in San Francisco ever since Moon Shadow was born. A close cousin of Moonshadow's father, Handclap, comes to take Moonshadow from China to America, which the Chinese call the Land of the Golden Mountain. Moonshadow arrives at San Francisco with Handclap as a Chinese immigrant of the early 20th century. Moonshadow meets his father and many other male relatives of him known as the "Company". Both Moonshadow and his father live and work with the "Company" in the Chinese section of the town. Some relatives of Windrider that Moonshadow meets are Uncle Bright Star, Lefty, White Deer, and Black Dog. When a man is killed in the town, Moonshadow's and his father's lives get endangered. The two of them decide to move to live with an American women and her granddaughter. There Windrider helps around their house along with Moonshadow, but in his spare time, Windrider studies aeronautics. Both Moonshadow and Windrider experience discrimination from some neighbors, but they also make valued friends. The 1906 earthquake changes Moonshadow's and Windrider's lives significantly, for they move to new home away from all the destruction. Inspired from the Wright Brothers and being a master kite maker, Windrider takes his time and builds an airplane named Dragonwings. He has a short flight in 1909, but he crashes and gets injured. Moonshadow thinks how lucky he is as a son of Windrider.
in chapter nine windrider finds out that moon shadow misses the Middle Kingdom and wants to go back!
in chapter 8 of dragonwings a tragic earthquake strikes sanfrancisco lives and then a huge fire breaks out and it takes the firefighters days to put the fire out
The airplane flies, but crashes and injures Moon Shadow's father. The Company pays the bills and this allows them to bring Moon Shadow's mother to America.
