Yes,Mr. Griffin dies. There's more to it though. Okayy. So, Betsy, Mark, Jeff, and David decide to bury Mr. G by the waterfalls on the mountain. They didn't bring Susan because they think she'll freak out and they're all talking bad about her, except for David because he has fount a something special about her. All the guys make fun of him because he actually like her. Then Betsy and David go and dispose Mr. Griffin's car, so there isn't any evidence.

Chapter 4 begins at Susan's house, when her blissful sleep is interrupted by the shrill ringing of the telephone. When she finally answers it, she's surprised to hear David's voice on the other end. David invites her to a picnic in the woods, and, astonished, she agrees. (This, of course, makes her very happy indeed, because, as you recall, she has a major crush on David.)

When David stops by to pick her up, Susan climbs in the car and is immediately introduced to Betsy, Mark, and Jeff, who are also coming along on the picnic.

As they drive out to the woods, Susan feels included and happy. She feels she is "one of the group" and has no trouble talking to any of them.

So they reach the woods, settle down near the waterfall, and begin to eat their picnic lunch (which mainly consists of chicken and chocolate cake). As they near the end of their delicious meal, the atmosphere becomes sleepy and comfortable as they casually talk about random things. David begins talking about Susan's glasses, and Betsy wonders aloud, "I wonder what Mr. Griffin looks like without HIS glasses." To which Jeff responds, "We'll have to take them off before we blindfold him."

Suddenly, with that comment, the atmosphere abruptly changes. Alarmed, Susan demands an explanation, and they inform her of their plan to kidnap Griffin. She is still very skeptical, though, and asks them what they want her to do. Says Mark, "You can make an appointment with him after school. Pretend you want to talk with him about the term paper or something. Hold him till the grounds are empty. Then, when he walks out to the parking lot, we'll get him." So basically, Susan is supposed to be the one that leads Mr. Griffin into danger.

Susan still doesn't agree though, and, to buy time, she asks what everyone else's job is. Betsy says: "Mine will be to provide alibis for everybody. The fellows are going to blindfold Griffin so he won't be able to see who anybody is. Then, afterward, he won't be able to accuse anyone."

Finally, Susan agrees, but only because David is a part of it too. The others show their pleasure by cheering, and as they congratulate Susan, she thinks drowsily, " 'Never in all the time to come will I ever, ever be as happy as I am now.' And she was right."

Which then introduces Chapter 5.
