The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood were influenced by reality and nature. Their early work portrayed Biblical scenes in a shockingly realistic way, rather than the perfectly painted scenes since Raphael. They were also inspired to express nature in an essentially beautiful and spiritual way and to use different techniques to achieve detail never seen before. After their first successes the reality of urban life became a favourite subject, but in a way that was truthful and sometimes ugly.
