In the old days, most homes had a "parlor" which was used only for very special occasions. One particular use was when a family member died, he (or she) would be placed in the parlor for the viewing. In warm weather viewings had to be quick or the body would begin to smell. To remedy this situation, "Funeral Parlors" came into fashion along with embalming. Then people began to refer to their parlors at home as "Living Rooms" and did away with the death reference.
