What is a good topic sentence for an essay about softball?

It is important--for you--to read this entire post and the related questions below. I'll share with you now that this was obviously an attempt to get others to do your homework. It absolutely amazes me that writing teachers seem incapable of communicating the one important aspect of essay writing. I'm going to try to do just that as I answer this question.

An essay is what the writer of the essay (you) thinks about the essay's topic. Since I am not the writer of your essay about the very large, broad topic of softball, it is impossible for me, or anyone for that matter, to give you your topic sentence. We do not know what you think about it. We do not know what you know about it. We do not have a clue what narrower topic youplan to discuss. You have to choose. You have to write it.

Now, that all being said, I'm not unsympathetic to your problem. It is important that you know that your essay is your voice that you use to share youropinion.

If you're still stuck, start asking questions (not the one you asked above) about your topic in your first draft, and try to answer them. You may have to do some reserch. Yeah, I know, I've suggested that you do work. How dare I? It's your opinion though. If it isn't important enough to you to put in the effort, it certainly won't be important to anyone else. Another way to look at it: we don't care what you think, feel, or believe, at least until you make us.
