The word harem comes from the Arabic word "Haram" which means forbidden, and harem in Arabic means "forbidden things/people".

A harem is the separate part of a Muslim household reserved for wives, concubines, and female servants or the women occupying this part of a household; the wives or concubines of a polygamous male.

The word "harem" has two connotations. In the sense of a group of wives in a polygynous situation, it has no real synonym. But it also means (and this is actually the original meaning of the word) the part of the house where all those wives live; the women's quarters of a house. A synonym for this is seraglio, or in Ancient Greece, gynaeceum.
