The difference is that historical fiction is a non real person or thing in a real life setting, history is what actually happened in that time or event Historical fiction is just like realistic fiction. Only that historical fiction is based in a time period, such as the Civil War, the Salem Witch Trials, the beheading of King Charles, or the gold rush. Realistic fiction could happen, but was partly made-up. In most historical fiction much effort goes into depicting the period detail. This is often a key feature of historical fiction. In a novel set in the present much more can be taken for granted. If one is going to write historical fiction, one must do the necessary research. For example, if you are going to set a novel in an Alpine monastery around the year 1400, you really must know how monasteries functioned at that time in that part of Europe.

"Historical fiction" is a genre of fiction that refers to works that take place within a specific historical period. What defines "historical" depends on the publisher, but it's usually at least 50 years old, if not older.

There are various historical subgenres too, depending on the publisher and other genres the story might fit into. For example, there are historical romance fiction stories, and within that category, there are "Regency" (1811-1820) stories, Westerns, Medieval, and so on.

One that is set in a historical period so accurately that the flaws in it are difficult to identify and refute. But it is not just a convincing period piece. It includes historical figures and events within the story itself. Historical novels often have the feel that the author is giving us the 'back story' that we always wanted to know. Examples are Aztec by Gary Jennings, and The Journeyer, by the same author, about the travels of Marco Polo. You could include novels like Ancient Evenings by Normal Mailer, about mystical events in ancient Egypt.

A novel that tells about a certain time period (like slavery or World War 1) but is not like a diary of someone who lived then... like the author made up a story about people who supposedly lived then...

Is the book a breath of Eyre a historical fiction novel?

A Breath of Eyre is actually about a girl who gets transported during a lightning storm into the novel, Jane Eyre. The time spent in the novel feels historical since the book is set in 1847, but about two-thirds of the novel is set in Emma's contemporary world. So I wouldn't call it a historical, really. It's more of a contemporary novel with a historical time travel twist.
