Inner conflict occurs when one is confronted with a problem that presents difficult choices. One must make a decision one way or another. Think about the events in your life and try to recall a time when you experienced an inner conflict.

External Conflict
External conflict occurs when one faces someone else or some situation that is working against one's own desires or goals.
A. What do you want?
B. What is working against you? What stands in the way between you and your goal?
Internal: A conflict inside a character, like debating with yourself. The typical angel-demon scene is an example of this.
External: A fight with someone or something else.
Internal Conflict is where the protagonist has problems with themself.
External Conflict is where the protagonist has problems with the antagonist.

Both although the major conflict was internal. The external conflict was between the protagonist and the head nun over his pay. The inner conflict was over his dedication to things noble and right.
The color purple is neither an internal nor an external conflict. It is a physical attribute with no direct association to conflicts in literature or storytelling.
