The word lanai is Hawaiian in origin and refers to an outside patio or porch connected to the house and situated to maximize the ocean breeze. The term was popularized with the TV series, The Golden Girls, as Blanch, Dorothy, Rose and Sofia puzzled out the problems of the day with post menopausal humor. Many current real estate listings for Florida now include reference to a lanai.
