One who dies for his beliefs. Originally, it was just the Christians, but now it has come to include any and everyone else, i.e. a person who dies for a great cause, or because of what he believes.

Old English, from Late Latin, from Greek 'martyr', earlier 'martys' (genitive form: martyros) literally 'witness'. Far predating (c.5th. cent BC) even the earliest Christian Era.
