The correct spelling is from French : maitre d' (from maître d'hôtel)

A man or a woman who is in charge of taking reservations and seating people at fancier, more upscale restaurants. They also will sometimes list off the specials of the day.

Some maitre d's will be hired headwaiters or floor managers, while in smaller restaurants, they may be the owners.
