"Matriarchal culture" refers to a culture in which women, especially mother and grandmother figures, rather than men, are the primary leadership. The term comes from the ancient Greek mater, meaning "mother" and archein, meaning "to rule."

Though most cultures have historically been "patriarchal," meaning men are the societal leaders. Numerous very successful cultures have been matriarchal, going back to the most ancient of times, to include Egypt, China, and numerous North American First Nations tribes as examples.

In these cultures, succession (who inherits what) was through the daughter, rather than the son.
