Ambiance, in a social sense, refers to the "mood" or style of a location. Especially as pertains to oneself. The way that people are expected to treat one another and the way that you can expect to be appropriately treated and respected.
By way of example, the ambiance of a fast food restaurant might differ significantly from the ambiance of a fine [and in my limited experience, usually expensive] dining experience, where manners are respected and expected.
In either situation, disabilities are respectfully accommodated, including but not limited to, emotional, physical or mental limitations.
Beyond behavior in social culture, pinnacles (and nadirs) of achievement can also evoke an ambiance.
The joy of viewing a painting such as Leonardo's Mona Lise, or David, or the sight of the ruins of the Twin Towers in New York City can invoke an ambiance of respect for the artist's ability to convey a scene or people with such magnificence so as to impart a sense of awe in the appreciation of the artists skill, or in the latter sense, the expanding sense of useless murder - a feeling or mood associated with a particular place, person, or thing
The original meaning of the word ambient (from the French) refers to that which is "common in the air". If you fly in a commercial air liner, the ambient air (outside of the airplane) would be extremely uncomfortable if not lethal. Minus 30 degrees below zero in the Fahrenheit scale with winds that could vary from 300 to much greater miles per hour.
Ergo, even though relative, ambience would refer to the conditions where you exist.
As opposed to the conditions (the relative ambience) contained within a testing area or an environment separate from your own. Each condition could be the same or vastly different, depending upon any changes applied to either environment
Can you tell that this is not easily defined, due to the relative nature of conditions?
Personally, I feel that the best definitions never use the word being defined within its definition. But I gave it a shot, tautology aside.
