For example, try John Updike's A&P: its story proceeds from beginning to end without any disruptions such as flashbacks, or sections that skip forward into the future. Non-linear narratives are the exact opposite, basically. A good example of this non-linear style is in William Faulkner's story "A Rose for Emily," which skips back and forth between events throughout the piece.
