The word has its meaning rooted in the fact that when The Bible was compiled, certain early books of Christian writing were deliberately not included in the bible, these texts are referred to as the apocrypha.

Thus apocryphal (note the spelling is not the same as in the question) means erroneous; fictitious, i.e of questionable authorship or authenticity.
