I found this same phrase -contraction of st. denys- when i was looking up my name - sydney. Basically the way i understand it contraction just means a shortened version of the word. It seems somewher some french person wanted to name their kid after St. Denys and thus you have sydney. I dont know that i believe this but its better than being a wide meadow.
