A hierarchy is a system of organization or authority that has assigned positions by level or rank, with higher levels taking precedence over lower ones.
It is a type of rank system. In a company for example, the heirarchy would start at the bottom with a low ranking supervisor, and then the next person would be a low level manager, then to a high level manager, then to the vice president, then to the president.
