The 1999 edition of the New International Webster's Student Dictionary says:

word n. a speech sound of the combination of sounds which has come to signify and communicate a particular idea or part.

It is circular discussion or argument. You cannot define a word using that word.

It would be similar as saying a book is true because the book itself says it's true.
