"Mechanical" thinking is a limited, machine-like way of solving problems. It is the result of the process of the progress of centuries of civilization. Humans strive to make their lives easier, faster and cheaper by adapting and manipulating their environent to fit outcome-based desires. The result is that those outcomes are gained at the cost of largely unintended consequences (like pollution or extinction of species). It can be best seen in oposition to "relational" thinking, which takes the whole system into account, a more flexible, responsive and ultimately sustainable way of solving problems.
