an archetypal journey

in literature: mirrors initiation rite into society (child>adult)

typical elements:

hero receives a call to leave his home. Goes on a journey where he will have to complete (often dangerous) trials. Guides and helper figures will orientate him, he eventually meets the other (often symbolical representation of the negative sides in hero). Upon completion of the trials he will find a treasure and can set out on the journey home. The new experience he gained changed him. He returns into his environment as a changed person.

The actual story you look at may divert from this pattern.
