A Claim of Fact tries to establish that something is or is not the case. Certain facts which are common knowledge or easily proved need not be argued about. But other claims of fact may be based on questionable statistics or unreliable authority or biased interpretations. Can you honestly claim, for example, that homosexual behavior is entirely responsible for the worldwide AIDS epidemic? Such claims of fact may affect the welfare of millions and so must be argued with great care.
An assertion is a forthright statement or declaration. It may be a fact, but the speaker or writer has not provided any evidence that it is.
