There is no way to determine where the abbreviation BBT (most commonly, Be Back Tomorrow in texting lingo) originated from, or who created it. It will just remain an enduring language mystery.

The technique most people use is first decide what sort of document is needed, create the required document, then depending on where the document is need either the document is printed on paper and put into the postal system or it is left in the electronic form it was created and attached to an E-mail and sent to the person it is creaated for.
I believe the abbreviation stands for "WordPerfect Document". It's is/was used by WordPerfect as the suffix for all their document names, i.e. resume.wpd is a document called resume created by WordPerfect. Microsoft Word (and now WordPerfect) saves documents with a .doc suffix as the native format for a document composed by Word.
