Samantha Sanders is the main character in the book called "The Weirdo" by Theodore Taylor. When she was only 9 she found a dead body at the edge of a swamp. She discovered the dead body; when she was walking home from school. Sam saw a bright blue cloth in the woods and she went to go see what it was. When she figured out what it was she ran home to call her mother but first she called the school district now crying. Now she is 16, and she is still terrified of it. But for Chip Clewt, the Powhatan is a place of safety. He lives like a loner in the swamp, where his greatest joy is studying bears. But the main reason Chip keeps himself hidden is because he is disfigured from an accident and most people call him the weirdo. Sam does not call him that though. In fact, they become great friends, and Chip helps Sam see the beauty of the Swamp. But things are about to change in the Powhatan Swamp. A hunting ban in effect for the past four years is due to expires within months. Environmentalists want to protect the swamp's wildlife; hunters are oiling their guns, too. Then someone completely unexpected comes forth to spearhead the conservation effort: The Weirdo!!!! To save the place he loves, Chip must face the world he has so long avoided- and possibly encourage the wrath of a murderer. Both Chip and Sam know this battle may have awful consequences.
