It is About a Boy named Tree-ear, who is an orphan. He goes to live with a man named Craneman (who has a bad leg)under a bridge because of an outbreak of sickness in the temple. He soon watches a potter named Min work. He then looks at one of his peices, when Min comes in he drops the peice and has to work for it. Then when he is done working that off, in hopes that Min will teach him to make a pot. He works for him for a year and a half. Then a commisioner named Kim comes, Kang (a rival potter) comes up with inlay work. Kang gets the commission, Kim comes to Min and offers a commission if Min delivers a pot to songdo with inlay work. Min says he can't because he is too old. Tree-ear offers to take it later. Min says yes. So when Tree-ear leaves he is robbed. They take his money for food and destroy the pots. He finds a shard he thinks shows Min's work. He brings it and Min gets a commission.

When Tree-ear comes back, Craneman is dead. He was on the bridge and a cart came by and he backed up and landed in the freezing water. So Min and Ajima (Min's wife) take him in and he learns to make a pot. The last line in the book is "Craneman, wherever you are in your journey, I hope your traveling on two good legs".
