Its a book by Bill Wallace.
Its about two kittens (Kikki and Toby) being forced from their home by their mother,
& picked up from their barn by a family of two kids, boy and girl, and a mother and father, called the Burkes.
The Burkes feed the kittens, on the first night, stew.
They really like it a lot more than their normal cat food.
They don't get it anymore after that night though and grow to miss it.
Somewhere in their first days of being at the Burkes Toby starts to mess with the dog. The dog is behind a wooden fence that Toby jumps over, and while the dog is chasing him, he runs right through a hole in it and mocks it for a while, then repeats the process. Toby finds it fun and it becomes a common thing.
As the kittens are slowly learning about the family and growing to trust them,
the two kids get into a fight over a toy or something, going something like this..
"That's mine!"
"Is not."
"Is too."
"Is not!"
"Is too!"
"ISNOT!"
"ISTOO!"
"SNOT!"
"STEW!"
This happens a couple times, and each time, the kittens are mistaken for thinking that they are being called to the kitchen to have stew for supper.
They talk it out and decide the children are just playing a mean prank on them.
Toby suggests they play it, to which they do on the first day,
but then Toby gets out of hand and starts wanting to play it every day.
When she denies him, out of anger - he starts eating all her food and being rude in general to kikki.
In the midst of the fight, they are called again a couple nights later for Stew.
Kikki is excited and runs to the kitchen to see Toby eating it.
She fights him and they are thrown outside.
Toby goes back to mess with the dog again.
It seems like normal Toby until he gets stuck in the hole from being so fat from all the food of Kikkis he ate.
He ends up getting caught by the dog and having his tail chewed off.
The get it fixed and all, in the end, but Toby promises never again to play snot stew.
