Young Tim Vaux and his uncle Geoff discover the wreck of an antique model ship after a storm unearths it after over 100 years beneath the sand. Inside, they find a note indicating that it was used as a messenger, a go-between for two lovers. Who were they? Why did they need to use a boat to deliver their messages? Thus begins a quest in to history for the young boy and his slightly eccentric but brilliant uncle that has ramifications for not only themselves and their family but also the modern-day decendants of the doomed lovers.

I used to have this as an audiobook when I was younger, but forgot about it until recently. It is easy to find copies on ebay going for as little as a penny, and is well worth picking up. It is only 120 pages long, and a determined reader could easily finish it in anywhere from as little as one evening to a week depending on time available and reading ability. It is also, in my opinion, VERY well written. Westall manages to write thoroughly atmospheric prose, and I certainly began to feel that I was really there at some points in the story, which is something that I find many authors struggle to do today with novels many times its size! It is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone from about ages 10 and up, I am 29 and still get sucked in to this fantastic tale that combines mystery, history, romance and adventure in a good-natured and entertaining yarn. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
