I think that the main theme is concerning the Devil and how people are so obsessed with material items, that they let their guard down and let the Devil take over.
I learned that Paul was so concerned with making his mother happy and getting her attention by reaching his goal (attaining luck), that he let his guard down, letting the Devil get into his body.
