People do not say "pay it backward". The original phrase was "pay back", which meant revenge or retribution. If someone did something nasty to you, you "pay them back" by doing something nasty to them.

This gave rise to the concept of "paying forward", which means that if someone does something nice to you, you do something nice for another person.
