I don't believe this is a 'real' word, as I can't find anything on the whole thing, but let's take a look at the prefix; Syn

Syn, from Ancient Greek συν- (syn-), meaning "identical", "with, together", and "concomitant".

Taking this into consideration: if the antagonist is the protagonist's opponent, in which they both are after the same thing, then the synagonist is a competitor they both are competing with. Then again, this is all speculation and I may be wrong.
