The paperback book is both taller and wider and is considerably more expensive. These variations in the book's appearance and price have their roots in the ways they are sold. Mass-market books are designed to fit into the racks set near the checkout counter at supermarkets, drugstores, hospital gift shops and airport newsstands. They are priced affordably so they can be bought on impulse. There are other production differences in binding and paper quality (historically, paperbacks were printed on "pulp" and could fit in the consumer's pocket). The format is often used for genre fiction, Science Fiction, romance, thrillers and mysteries. There is also a large category of books known as mass-market originals. Besides being somewhat larger in size than mass-market versions, paperbacks are generally printed on more expensive paper and with sturdier binding. Because they are more expensive to produce they are higher in price and often (not always) printed in smaller numbers. Unlike mass-market paperbacks, which are usually sold on racks, trade paperbacks are sold in bookstores ("to the trade") and are shelved with their spines facing out, like hardcovers. Sometimes they are sold on display tables, lying flat so that customers can respond to their cover art.

"Soft cover" and "paperback" are two phrases for the same thing. They are contrasted with "hard-cover" books. As stated above, typically paperback or soft cover books are sold in two different styles "mass market" and "trade." These are publishing terms, and a lot of the difference has to do with the way they are distributed to bookstores and the return policies (from the bookseller back to the publisher.) Trade paperbacks are typically more expensive and larger. Mass market paperbacks are the smaller size you will also see in drug stores etc., and are sometimes called pocket books.

A "Perfect Paperback" simply refers to the binding process .It has nothing whatsoever to do with the book's condition. It's a type of binding often used for paperbacks where the spine is glued. Since it's the most commonly used sort of binding for paperbacks, chances are there's no difference between the two assuming it's a recent book. Perfect (paperback) binding is very popular and clean looking, this type of binding suits books from 70 pages or more. Three sides of the book are guillotined after binding to give a sharp edge. It is the larger size paperback. But there is really no exact size it will be but it will most likely be similar in size to a regular hardcover. It will be bound on nicer paper than a mass market paperback(Romance novels in the supermarket are mass market). Also it is much more sturdy than a mass market paperback.
