The character Joy-Hulga attempts throughout the story to become independent from traditional society. Her efforts include changing her given name "Joy" (an ironic choice as none of the women in the story Mrs. Freeman Mrs. Hopewell, or Joy ever experience "freedom", "hope", or "joy") and also taking out The Bible salesman. In the end, her prosthetic leg (the most important thing that made her different from mainstream) was snatched fom her. By taking away her leg, the salesman took away her non-conformity and crippled her once again. This is existential because no matter how hard Joy tried to be different and separate from society, her differences ended up making her dependent upon that which she was trying to break free.
