A fetch in Irish legend is the apparition of someones shadow seen not accompanying the shadow's owner (think Peter Pan.) A fetch seen without the owner means death of the shadow's owner. It is greatly akin to another European legend, A doppelganger. The main difference however, a fetch can be seen by anyone, whereas, a doppelganger can only be seen by their opposite. A fetch is commonly said to haunt the dying person to death.
