This is a sick sort of euphemism that doesn:t lighten the facts but aggravates them. It was widely proselytized by Church schools in the sixties and was tossed about as a veritable epithet. Kids were instructed by Church Brothers (those versatile ecclesiastical non-com men) to shun kids from Broken Homes ( this phrase was always used, never 9 Kids from divorced families) - like there is a distinction between the religious ( Bowing one"s head) and the seculat (Nodding) though they are the same gesture, quite the opposite is true- Divorce was blasted like something akin to communism or worse, a domestic demiurge that was wrecking families and fuelilng juvenile delinquency and crime. The controlled atmosphere of the ( pseudo fiction) in the the readers only focussed on (Normal) families such as one is accustomed to with, for example Dennis the Menace. Only normal family life was shown, even in Problem-story stuff no mention of the plight of children from divorced- oops (Brrooken Homes!) ti was really a sick mis-handling of a problem or condition afflicting tens of millions of American families- it was always talkied around. Divorce was never discussed objectively. oddly there was sympathy for ( war orphans) and ( abandoned Kids) in far-off foreign lands, but a total rejection of dysfunctional families- as a domestic problem, in the US> A sorry sham. Term does not refer to building or structural damage as caused by fires, weather damage, or vandalism. not normally.
