Inscribe comes from the Latin word for writing (as does scribe, scribble, script, scripture and so on), scribere, with the prefix in-. Thus it means "written in", carved into a surface. You can inscribe the date on the cornerstone of a building. And of course, once it's inscribed, you have an inscription.
