It is from older times when farmers had outhouses (privvys) instead of toilets inside the home. When you couldn't find someone, a light-hearted answer would be "He went out to **** and the hogs ate him!", alluding to some unfortunate accident (heart attack, slip and fall, death by exposure to cold, etc) that befell the poor guy on his way to the outhouse. The outhouse was commonly located near to the house as were the hog pens. Sort of inaccurate because no one would actually enter the hog lot on the way to the outhouse but the saying instilled fear in young children who enjoyed balancing on hog lot fences either sitting or walking like a trapeze artist. By the way, give a hog an opportunity and they will eat you!
ate
No, that's not a run-on sentence. Technically, it's a simple sentence with a compound verb. It contains a single subject and three verbs. "You" is the subject of the sentence. The three verbs are "went," "ate" and "ate." In other words, there is one person doing three actions. Admittedly, it's not a very goodsentence, but it is grammatically correct.
It can be (precipitate, neonate), but it is usually a verb form when added to nouns (alien-alienate, decor-decorate). The suffix -ion or -tion is a noun form for those verbs. The ending -ate is also seen in adjectives (profligate).
