The writer O'Flaherty has used irony very effectively towards the end of the story so that it can leave a lasting impact on the raeders. The irony comes in when the sniper realises that the enemy he has killed was no one else than his brother. This comes as a shock to the sniper and along with him the raeders are also hocked. This relevation forces both the sniper and the readers to ponder and reflect over the futility of war and violence. The writer wants to convey that no amount of violence can solve human problems.

The sniper was intelligent and a very good shooter too. Through out the story he has been able to save himself from the enemy bullets. This makes him feel very victorious but before he could clebrate his victory it was his curiosity that forced him to take the risk of finding out the identity of the enemy sniper, and this when he realised that he had killed his own brother. The sniper grew deeply disillusioned and reflects on the futility and the tragedy that war and violence bring alnog with them. He condemns the glorification of violence.
