Its difficult to trace orally told legends back to their original creation (for example, we know that the illiad had been a epic poem for hundreds of years before it was written down, but its difficult to discover how many hundreds of years).
So, the oldest recorded legends that we can trace include stories relating to the rig veda on Rama in Ramayana and the ancient sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh.

The oldest forms of literature known to man are not actually in a book, but are written on the walls of Ancient Egyptian pyramids.
The oldest published literature, that we have discovered so far, is a book called "Instructions of Shuruppak", written by the Ancient Sumerians.
It is possible there are older books waiting to be discovered. Many books have become victims of time and nature, decomposing into dust.
There were also millions of ancient books stored inside the Library of Alexandria - which burned down, hence burning all the books inside.

∙ 13y agoGilgamesh and epic which dates back to the 7th century BC. It was written on stone tablets but much of it survives. There are many gaps in the story but it is stll readable. The first known account of the "Noah's Ark" story is in this epic.
