All Quiet On The Western Front is a book about World War I. It describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life that was experienced upon coming home.
The significance lies in the last page in the novel where it tells of the protaganist characters death ironically on a day that is "all quiet on the western front."
This sums up many of the themes in the novel such as
These themes contribute to Remarque's pacafist message of the book stated in his statement of intent "to tell of a ageneration of men who even though escaped the bombs were destroyed by the war."
Erich Marie Remarque's novel is about a German youth's experience of war, (WW1). From the outbreak of the conflict, when he and his classmates are caught up in the patriotic fervour displayed by the populations of both sides, the story follows their journey through training to the front lines and their realisation through experience that war is dirty, bloody, boring, terrifying, mindlessly brutal, pointless and fought between human beings no different than themselves, some of whom are boring, all are terrified, some brutal and very many killed or maimed at totally random times and by totally random means. But even amid the squalor and carnage, the youth retains his humanity and reaches out for a symbol of beauty.
They realize that despite their sincerest efforts to stay alive they could still be killed no matter what precautions they took to stay alive and so they seem to be indifferent to their fate .
Erich Maria Remarque ( a German with a French last name) authored this essentially anti-war war novel based on his experiences as the fictional trooper Paul in the German Army in World War I trench operations. There were various film versions. An early one made around l932 was banned in Nazi Germany ( it was a US production as essentially anti-war despite military setting- this was an absolute taboo in Nazi Germany- as were anything making fun of the Government or Armed forces- There were essentially no Service Comedies out of filmdom in Berlin!
