From the outbreak of the conflict, when he and his classmates are caught up in the patriotic fervour displayed by the populations of both sides, the story follows their journey through training to the front lines and their realisation through experience that war is dirty, bloody, boring, terrifying, mindlessly brutal, pointless and fought between human beings no different than themselves, some of whom are boring, all are terrified, some brutal and very many killed or maimed at totally random times and by totally random means. But even amid the squalor and carnage, the youth retains his humanity and reaches out for a symbol of beauty.
