IN THE WOODS
By Hannah brake
Her bright blue shoes are a blur, the thumps of her feet pounding against the forest floor are swallowed up by the wind as it whips throughout the trees. It is a roar and as she runs it echoes through her ears and rattles her brain. As her shoes run off the ground the leaves fly up and slowly float back down to rest again on the damp soil. They don't settle there for long, soon upturned again by more running feet, pursuing her.
People are shouting her name, she can hear their calls. As she concentrates on the path she is creating, she blocks out their voices. The sun is going down and the woods are turning black and grey. If it was any other situation she would have been terrified, but being scared is the last thing on her mind tonight. As she continues to escape her legs begin to feel the effects, but her mind is not ready to stop running. How could she do this to her? She was supposed to be there for her, it's her job.
She wasn't prepared for this news; it was the cruelest surprise. Her only thought was to get out, away from all these people who were trying to tell her that this was the truth. This couldn't be the truth- her mother wouldn't do this to her.
So she ran.
The woods were the only place that had always frightened her; forever they had been there, threatening, at the back of her house. This time, though, they were her safe haven. It would be harder for anyone to find her in this maze of overgrown shrubs and giant ancient trees.
It is almost pitch black now and she begins to feel claustrophobic. The dense trees loom overhead, hiding all the stars. She can't hear anybody calling for her now. Maybe she lost them, or maybe they have just given up. Her mind and body are exhausted, without realizing what she is doing her running slows and she sinks to her knees.
All she wants is to get away, away from these people and away from the truth. Her mind drifts back to her mother, but she is so tired. She feels her eyelids begin to droop. Her eyes are closing but her mind is still working. Finally she falls into a nightmare ridden sleep.
