Sparking means to court. The term was in use from the late 1800's, presumably before, during and after the Civil War. In the 1960 Western, Sergeant Rutledge, starring Jeffrey Hunter and Woody Strode, the word was used to describe the young white girl assumed murdered by Strode's Buffalo Soldier character of the movie's title, implying that he raped and killed her and for which he stands trial.
