Was Philimon's heart not Broken more and how humiliated would a guy not be if he finds out his wife is sleeping with someone else (Unless its a girl and he gets in on that action).

The story revolves around Philemon and Matilda and deals with their relationship after Philemon has discovered that she has been having an extra-marital affair.

The opening of the story establishes Philemon as a happy man. His life follows a stable set routine. He is grateful and imagines that his life will continue in this fashion until he dies. He is a kind and generous man and treats his wife with respect. Not only does he take her breakfast in bed, but he is also willing to do the dishes. She, however, refuses to allow him to wash them. As a character, Matilda is not developed in the opening stages of the story and the only thing we are told is that she appreciates Philemon's kindness to her. However, we realise, in retrospect, that she has been deceiving Philemon by having an affair behind his back.

Before the revelation of his wife's infidelity, his life was a routine of daily activity - much like the routine functioning of a piece of machinery. When he is told, he seems to break down, as a machine would break down; however, something sinister happens in his, "innermeost recesses". The description is frighteningly vivid and violent, and represents Philemon's mental reaction to what he has heard. The implication is that he becomes mentally unbalanced by what he now knows about his wife.

The bus ride home is indicative of Philemon's disturbed state of mind. The bus was now emptier, but he, "suffered crushing claustrophobia." This suggests that his thoughts are almost too overwhelming for him to bear. Even the soiled laundry that the washerwomen on the bus carry reminds him of Matilda's infidelity.

Matilda's character develops in the latter half of the story. As a result of her unhappy home life with Philemon and the suit, she joins a Cultural Club, which gives new purpose to her life. She has in fact two existences: the miserable life at home and the expansive, fulfilling life with the club.

"The Suit" is not a radical protest against apartheid, but the attitude of the narrator towards is does emerge at times.
