Although the epitaph-poems in the Spoon River Anthologyhave many references, some of them obscure, to Masters' life and reading, he is not shy about revealing openly, again and again, the theme of the work. "The Hill," which launches the series, will give you the general setting and will prepare you for the theme, which emerges clearly as you read the poems. The poems need not be read in sequence, and if reading poetry is a skill that challenges you, then you can begin with the shorter poems, which will be easier to grasp. As you read, remember that a poem always means more than it says. Read for the plain sense first -- the story -- and then try to see beyond the stories to the hopes, fears, longings, conflicts, frustrations, and struggles of the people who are giving you their epitaphs. If you can summarize those stories and feelings, then you will have a grasp of Masters' theme. Try your hand at the story and the frustrations of "Judge Somers": How does it happen, tell me,
That I who was most erudite of lawyers,
Who knew Blackstone and Coke
Almost by heart, who made the greatest speech
The court-house ever heard, and wrote
A brief that won the praise of Justice Breese
How does it happen, tell me,
That I lie here unmarked, forgotten,
While Chase Henry, the town drunkard,
Has a marble block, topped by an urn
Wherein Nature, in a mood ironical,
Has sown a flowering weed?

Daisy Fraser is reportably the town prostitute. She also had an illegitimate child with Benjamin Pantier. She gets sent to court repeatedly, and is forced to pay varies fines as a result. Everyone in the town knows of her and speaks of her but not to her. She is a liberal, although liberals would not want her presence at their meetings. Daisy has insider knowledge of some of the corruption going on in Spoon River and therefore has a very different perspective that shows in her monologue.Hope that helps, I'm just starting my research on this character and will add more if I can think of more!

Because Edgar Lee Masters puts the idea of a small town under a totally different light for the time period it is considered controversial. He does this by having most of the characters in the Spoon River Anthology commit sins and have things happen to them that most people thought was unheard of for a closely knit community of a small town.
