Zama Zamas are illegal gold and diamond miners in South Africa. They occupy both operating and disused mines. They are mostly foreigners from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Zama Zamas can spend many weeks down in the mines at a time and many die from disease or carbon dioxide poisioning. Zama means "trying your luck".
