The blue in gathering blue represents something which must be searched for. It represents something which is lacking in the dystopian world of Kira's. Just as Matt finds blue, Kira must also find out the truth behind her dystopian world, and find the thing that is lackign from her dystopian world, and try to change the future of the people

The story is supposed to take place in the future. Some believe their way of life is a result of what the bad economy led to.
In "Gathering Blue" by Lois Lowry, Kira, Thomas, and Matt discover a hidden room in the council Edifice where Kira's father worked. Inside, they find examples of beautiful embroidered cloth, supplies for dyeing, and a loom. This discovery leads Kira to realize the value of her talents and the possibility of creating something meaningful for her community.

Kira's father is dead before the events of "Gathering Blue." He was a skilled dyer and artist who passed his talent down to Kira.

Annabella is an old lady from Gathering Blue, she makes the dyes that Kira needs to recreate the robe. Kira gets the blue when Matt(the boy) goes to a far away town to get the blue. On the way there and back, he finds out many details that Kira needs to know about. Like, how her father is alive, and who planned on killing him, and things like that.
Kira never actually makes blue in the book. She has just received a blue dye plant and planted it when the story ends.
In "Gathering Blue" by Lois Lowry, Kira is accused of murdering her mother. However, it is later revealed that she is not guilty of the crime, as her mother was actually killed by a beast in the surrounding forest.
