That she is away. She is really dead
Mr. Pignati, in The Pigman by Paul Zindel, is an old man that John Conlan and Lorraine Jensen meet. They meet him by randomly picking his phone number out of the phone book and prank calling him. They end up going to his house almost every day to spend time with him. They called Pignati "the pigman" because he had a large collection of pigs that reminded him of his dead wife, Conchetta. He has a heart attack while chasing John up the steps on roller skates and goes to the hospital. He comes home early and finds that John and Lorraine threw a party at his house. Everything is trashed, including his collection of pigs. He is very upset. The next day, John and Lorraine call him to apologize. They invite him to go to the zoo where his best friend, Bobo the monkey, lives. Once they get there, they notice that Bobo isn't there and ask a worker where he is. Bobo had died of pneumonia. This makes Pignati very sad and he basically drops dead right then and there. The story doesn't say what he dide of. Maybe just too much sadness and he couldn't take it? John matures at the end because of Pignati and the lesson that he tought them. Friendship.
