The dictionary calls not a negating adverb.

An adverb is a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Not is the main word to make negatives in English. It is often used in he shortened form -n't. eg didn't, hadn't, haven't.

Example uses:

The copier is not working. (modifies the verb 'is working')

The copier isn't working. (forms the contraction of 'is not')

These shoes are not new. (modifies the adjective 'new')

These shoes aren't new. (forms the contraction of 'are not')

The movie was not very good. (modifies the adverb 'very')

The movie wasn't very good. (forms the contraction of 'was not')
