Co-dependency is in a relationship when somebody relies on the other for something, but really both people benefit from the relationship. This is often seen, when one person is suffering from something, and they need somebody to rely on. For example, somebody who is suffering from agoraphobia would need somebody who they can rely on to venture out into the world and bring back resources, for an agoraphobic would not be able to do this for themselves. In return, the scavenger benefits from this relationship. He or she gets to play the role of the guardian angel, for the recluse cannot survive without them. Once the one suffering deals with his or her problems, the scavenger is no longer needed in the same manner. Thus the relationship often ends. This is one of the struggles that co-dependency can cause.
