Someone who looks after something which has been given to them and is really not their own possession, though they may have in some cases the use of it for a time. Since the steward is entrusted with something the steward is also accountable to the person who gave them the job. Many people today do similar tasks as in the Bible but are just not called stewards. The closest similar position today would be manager. Unless they own the business or company they will be accountable to someone higher up for what they do as manager. People who are not good stewards (or managers) can have drastic consequences on others. Hence the current financial crisis (Oct 2008).
